Getting Started

The U.S., or federal government, has been acquiring and publishing information since it came into being over 200 years ago. Brockport's library has been a "government depository" since the late 1960s. That means we regularly get some of the information the government puts out in print or microform. In recent years the government is increasingly publishing its information online, where anyone can access it. The trick of course is finding what you want, and this guide will help you to do just that.

For further assistance, try the "More Help" tab. You are also welcome to contact Lori Lampert, our government documents librarian. Her email is llampert@brockport.edu, and her phone number is 585-395-5191.

General access

There are some basic general access points to exploring the federal government and its information resources. For more specific resources, look for a tab in the guide that most closely matches your research needs.

  • GPO Access: the GPO is the Government Printing Office. Their website is a major, general purpose access point to the federal government.
  • FDsys: this is the Federal Digital System, a site developed by the GPO that will eventually replace GPO Access (mid-2009). It's easier to read and use. Currently, the only documents searchable in FDsys are:
    • Compilation of Presidential Documents (1993 to Present)
    • Congressional Bills (103rd Congress to Present)
    • Congressional Documents (104th Congress to Present)
    • Congressional Hearings (105th Congress to Present)
    • Congressional Record (1994 to Present)
    • Congressional Reports (104th Congress to Present)
    • Federal Register (1994 to Present)
    • Public and Private Laws (104th Congress to Present)
